A cheval mirror is a freestanding, full-length mirror suspended in a frame that allows it to swivel or tilt. Originating in France during the late 18th century, the term derives from the French word for horse, referencing the four-legged trestle base typically used to support the pivoting frame.

Traditional pieces were crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring hand-carved detailing, brass pivoting pins, and weighted legs for stability. The mirror glass itself was historically bevelled and silvered by hand, set within a mortise and tenon jointed wooden frame.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the wood grain, joinery techniques, and the characteristics of the mirror plate. Older mirrors frequently exhibit slight imperfections, foxing, or oxidisation in the glass, alongside hand-cut screws, traditional dovetails or tenons, and period-appropriate hardware.

Such a mirror serves as both a functional dressing accessory and a tool to amplify natural light and create the illusion of space in a room. It pairs effectively with contemporary minimalism to add historic texture, or within a traditional bedroom scheme to enhance period character.

Preservation involves keeping the wooden frame away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent warping or cracking. The glass should be cleaned sparingly using a soft microfiber cloth and a mild, ammonia-free cleaning solution applied to the cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the glass.
