Balloon back chairs originated during the Victorian era, specifically gaining popularity in the mid-19th century. Characterised by their continuous, curved top rails that resemble the shape of a balloon, these chairs reflect the ornate and formal design sensibilities of the period.

These chairs are traditionally crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. Construction typically involves traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon, with steam-bent timber used to achieve the distinctive curved backrest.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-carved details, traditional hand-turned legs, and construction hallmarks such as hand-cut screws, visible timber shrinkage, and aged patina on the wood finish. The framing timbers should show the rich grain and deep colour typical of period hardwoods.

Integrating antique chairs into a contemporary setting creates visual contrast and depth. Pairing a set of traditional wooden chairs with a modern minimalist dining table or mixing them with different seating styles adds eclectic character to a dining space.

Preserve the timber by maintaining stable room humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and treating the wood periodically with appropriate microcrystalline wax. Upholstery should be professionally cleaned using methods suitable for delicate period textiles.
