Antique Victorian Set of 6 Mahogany Dining Chairs with Tulip Legs

19th century
Description

A handsome set of Victorian mahogany dining chairs, displaying elegant mid-19th-century design and excellent proportions. The chairs feature shaped backs with gently curved rails, upholstered panels and seats, all framed in well-figured mahogany.

They stand on finely turned tulip legs to the front, with swept rear legs, giving the set a refined and decorative stance. The colour of the mahogany is rich and warm, complementing the upholstery beautifully and highlighting the quality of the timber.

These chairs are both practical and decorative, well suited to a formal dining room or as accent seating, and represent a classic and timeless Victorian form.

Condition

Very good antique condition. Structurally sound and sturdy throughout, with good colour and patina to the mahogany. The upholstery is clean and presentable, with minor signs of wear consistent with age and use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian dining chairs from the mid-to-late nineteenth century typically feature solid hardwood frames, rounded balloon or spoon backs, and decoratively turned or cabriole legs. Designed for formal dining rooms, they emphasize curved silhouettes and integrated upholstery.

Primary framing materials included dark hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, constructed using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Seating was padded using natural materials like horsehair, wool felt, and coil springs, finished with velvet, leather, or damask fabrics.

Authentic period chairs exhibit hand-carved details, natural timber patination, and mortise-and-tenon frame construction visible on the underside. Look for hand-turned legs, original brass castors where applicable, and structural wear consistent with long-term domestic use.

Pair rich mahogany frames with contemporary minimalist dining tables crafted from light oak or marble to create visual contrast. Updating upholstery fabrics or placing the set against clean neutral wall tones softens the formal appearance while highlighting historic wood tones.

Clean wood frames using a soft lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain to protect the finish. Vacuum velvet upholstery gently with a soft brush attachment and position chairs away from direct sunlight and central heating sources.
