FAQs

Balloon back chairs originated during the early nineteenth century and became a defining style of the Victorian era. Characterised by a continuous, curved wooden backrest forming an open oval shape, they were widely produced in mahogany and walnut for formal dining rooms.

Victorian dining chairs were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. Construction involved mortise and tenon joinery, hand-turned legs, and padded seats upholstered in woven fabrics, velvet, or leather.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples often feature hand-carved framework with subtle variations, natural age patina on the timber, and traditional construction marks beneath the seat frame. The weight of solid mahogany or walnut also helps distinguish genuine period pieces from modern reproductions.

These chairs can be integrated into contemporary homes by pairing them with streamlined wooden or stone dining tables to create an eclectic contrast. Re-upholstering the seats in neutral contemporary textiles can also bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Clean wood surfaces using a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax periodically to maintain the timber finish and prevent drying. Keep the chairs away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to protect the wood from warping and prevent fabric fading.
