FAQs

Tea caddies originated in the 18th century when tea was an expensive commodity, necessitating secure, lockable containers to protect the precious leaves from theft and moisture.

Caddies were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany, rosewood, and walnut, often featuring fine brass escutcheons, hinges, and internal foil linings or wooden partitions.

Authentic pieces usually display period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails, older patination on the timber, and original brass hardware rather than modern replacement screws.

An antique caddy can be placed on a bookshelf, sideboard, or mantelpiece as a decorative object that adds historical texture and functional warmth to contemporary spaces.

Preserve the wood by keeping the item away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying occasional applications of microcrystalline wax to maintain the finish.
