Description

A beautiful and impressive antique carved walnut corner chair. This was most likely made in Italy, we would date it to around the 1790’s period.

It is of extremely fine quality, with crisp and interesting carving, including gargoyles around the outer edges and a cherub on the top edge. The chair is beautifully designed and is a useful size.

We have had the frame re-polished and the seat has been newly upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is superb for its age, with a gorgeous overall patina.

Corner chairs, also known as roundabout or writing chairs, first appeared in the early 18th century during the George I period. Designed to fit neatly into the corner of a room or to be used at a small desk, their unique diagonal format offered a compact yet comfortable seating solution.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, featuring mortise and tenon joinery. The framework often incorporates intricate hand-carved details, pierced splats, and cabriole legs terminating in pad or claw-and-ball feet.

Authentic period pieces display consistent signs of age, including hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage, and natural oxidisation of the wood. Examination of the underside often reveals older secondary woods, hand-forged fixings, and wear patterns consistent with historical usage.

This versatile seating form functions effectively as an accent piece in a study, library, or hallway, paired with contemporary or minimalist furnishings to highlight its sculptural wooden frame. Re-upholstering the drop-in seat pad in a neutral linen or velvet bridges historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking. Routine maintenance involves dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the wood grain.
