FAQs

A French overmantel mirror is a large decorative looking glass traditionally designed to hang or stand on the mantelpiece above a fireplace, often featuring arched tops and ornate gesso or carved wooden frames.

Traditional pieces typically feature hand-carved wooden frames or moulded gesso on pine, finished with hand-applied paint, chalk, or gilding, housing silvered sheet glass with bevelled edges.

Authentic period pieces often show signs of age such as foxing or oxidisation on the mirror plate, hand-cut joinery on the reverse timber backing, and minor wear to the painted or gilded surface.

These pieces work effectively as focal points in contemporary spaces, either mounted above a fireplace or leaned against a wall to bounce light around the room and create a sense of height.

Clean the glass sparingly with a soft microfiber cloth and a mild vinegar solution, avoiding harsh chemicals, and protect the fragile wooden or gesso frame from excessive moisture and direct sunlight.
