FAQs

Ladder back chairs with woven rush seats originate from traditional European rural craftsmanship, where local woodworkers utilised locally sourced timber and natural fibres to create practical, durable seating for farmhouses and country homes.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as fruitwood, oak, or beech, featuring joined ladder backs, cabriole or turned legs, and seats hand-woven from natural swamp rush or straw.

Authenticity is identified through traditional joinery methods like mortise and tenon, signs of hand-weaving in the rush pattern, natural patina on the timber, and minor irregularities indicative of handcrafted production rather than modern machine manufacturing.

They can be integrated into modern dining spaces by pairing them with a sleek, minimalist table to create a balanced contrast between rustic textures and clean, contemporary lines.

Preservation involves keeping the chairs away from excessive moisture to protect the natural woven rush, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and occasionally applying appropriate furniture wax to nourish the wood.
