A cheval mirror is a freestanding, full-length mirror mounted on a frame with pivots that allow it to tilt. The design gained widespread popularity during the late 18th century and remained a staple of Victorian bedroom furniture throughout the 19th century.

These mirrors were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring finely turned uprights, carved crestings, and brass pivot hardware. The glass plates of the period frequently featured bevelled edges.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, construction joints such as dovetails or hand-cut screws, the presence of old mirror glass with subtle imperfections or oxidation, and the wear patterns on the wooden base and pivot mechanisms.

A period floor mirror provides a functional focal point and reflects natural light, making it suitable for placement in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to create a deliberate contrast against minimalist modern furnishings.

Preservation requires keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to protect the wood and prevent silver degradation on the mirror glass. Dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying traditional beeswax maintains the timber finish.
