Georgian mirrors from the early 18th century typically feature classical architectural proportions, often incorporating carved wood and gesso frames finished with gold leaf, with segmented plates necessitated by historical glass-making limitations.

These pieces were constructed using softwoods such as pine for the primary frame, layered with gesso to create crisp carved details, and finished with gold leaf. The glass plates are traditionally hand-silvered and held within separate internal sections.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved gesso detailing showing natural wear, historical oxidisation and foxing within the mirror plates, and old pine backing boards secured with handmade iron nails.

Placing a large gilded mirror in a contemporary setting creates a striking focal point, balancing minimalist modern furniture with historical texture and reflective warmth.

Preservation involves keeping the mirror away from direct sunlight and damp environments to protect the fragile gold leaf and the historical silvering on the glass, using only a dry, soft cloth for very gentle dusting.
