An 18th-century steel snuff box is a small, portable container historically used by gentlemen to carry ground tobacco, known as snuff, which was consumed by inhaling through the nose.

These boxes were typically forged from steel or iron and often featured hand-engraved inscriptions, chased details, or inlaid metals, showcasing the craftsmanship of the period.

Authentication involves examining the hand-cut engraving style, the natural oxidisation and patina of the metal, the construction of the hinge, and any contemporary signatures or date markers.

An antique snuff box can be displayed on a bookshelf, coffee table, or desk as a small cabinet of curiosities object, adding historical texture and a personal touch to contemporary decor.

Antique steel should be kept in a stable, low-humidity environment and gently dusted with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that might damage the historic patina.
