Description

A superbly stylish Regency bergere of great proportions with excellent condition cane-work to the shaped back with curved top rail complimented with scrolled over top edge on down swept sides, culminating at carved and scrolled lapets. The chair stands well upon out swept sabre legs to the rear and straight octagonal-tapering front, terminating upon original brass castors.

The chair presents well, in excellent structural condition and elegant timeworn patina.

Dimensions

Height 81cm

Depth 60cm

Width 54cm

Presented in mostly excellent, original condition, sold as it is. We consider the chair to be in very good condition, not showroom condition as we feel it shows it’s age well evidence of use minimal wear.., a tiny 3-4mm split in rear section of side rail where it joins top rail which is due to atmospheric drying and not a structural defect, this is minimal and we may later decide to consign to the workshop for some minimal conservation and polish but otherwise ready to go.

No obvious signs of repairs or defects.

Please request more photos and any questions invited.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency design, prevalent in Britain during the early 19th century, draws heavily on classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs, characterised by clean lines, classical proportions, and sophisticated ornamentation.

These chairs were typically constructed using native and exotic hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, oak, or simulated wood finishes, often incorporating woven cane panels for lightness and flexibility.

Authenticity is determined by examining traditional construction methods, such as hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage, patination consistent with age, and period-appropriate hardware like brass castors.

Pairing a historical chair with minimalist modern furnishings creates a striking focal point, allowing the craftsmanship and rich timber tones to introduce texture and historical depth to the space.

Maintain the timber using microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish, avoid direct sunlight to prevent timber splitting, and clean cane gently with a damp cloth without saturating the material.
