Description

This large and impressive Edwardian tapered-legged armchair stands well and looks great. Its oversized proportions make it a perfect chair for reading, lounging, and even storytelling, as it's big enough for two, albeit an extra little one. It is being offered in an unrestored condition but is eminently useable as it is. As you would expect, the frame is of superior quality to many modern equivalents, making it a perfect candidate for re-upholstery if so desired. The castors are original and the armchair is structurally sound. Whether you are looking for a chair to refurbish or an additional fire-side chair for the winter, this antique armchair will suit your needs. The seat measures 57 cm deep x 44 cm wide.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian furniture, spanning the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, is characterised by lighter, more airy designs that moved away from the heavy, dark ornamentation of the Victorian era, often drawing inspiration from 18th-century Sheraton and Chippendale revivals.

Pieces from this period typically feature sturdy hardwood frames made from mahogany, walnut, or beech, often joined with traditional mortise and tenon joints, and upholstered using horsehair stuffing and coil springs for durability and comfort.

Authentic Edwardian items can be identified through period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned wooden legs often fitted with brass castors, and original upholstery tacking or textile wear patterns consistent with early 20th-century manufacture.

Pairing a period upholstered chair with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a striking contrast, allowing the historic textile and silhouette to serve as a textured focal point within a neutral or monochromatic room scheme.

Preservation involves regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment to remove dust, keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and consulting a professional conservator for deep cleaning or structural repairs.
