The Regency style spans the early 19th century, drawing heavy inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs, characterised by symmetry, restrained ornamentation, and architectural details such as columns and cornices.

These mirrors were typically constructed from softwood or hardwood bases, layered with gesso, and meticulously hand-gilded with gold leaf. Often, a reverse-painted glass panel or eglomise technique featured in the upper frieze.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut joinery, oxidised iron fixings, age-related foxing on the mercury or silvered glass plate, and crazing within the gesso layer.

An antique giltwood mirror introduces warmth and historical contrast when hung above a minimalist mantelpiece, paired against neutral plastered walls, or positioned to reflect natural light in a hallway.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted gently with a dry, soft feather duster or microfibre cloth. Liquid cleaners, abrasives, and direct sunlight must be strictly avoided to prevent damage to the delicate gold leaf and gesso.
