Tea caddies originated in the 17th century when tea was an expensive and heavily taxed commodity. They were designed as secure, lockable containers to preserve the aroma and prevent theft of the precious leaves.

Cabinetmakers utilised dense exotic hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and tortoiseshell, frequently embellishing them with intricate brass stringing, mother-of-pearl inlay, and finely crafted marquetry.

Authenticity is determined by examining the interior construction, handmade dovetail joints, original lock mechanisms, historical wear patterns, and the natural ageing and patina of the timber.

Place the caddy on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf as a standalone decorative object that introduces historical texture, rich wood tones, and curated character to modern living spaces.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations. Occasionally apply a microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood and protect the historical finish.
