A writing slope is a portable, hinged box designed to fold open and create an inclined writing surface, which historically housed compartments for paper, inkwells, and correspondence materials during the 19th century.

These boxes were typically constructed from hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, frequently accented with brass corner brackets, escutcheons, and inlaid veneers to provide both structural durability and decorative appeal.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period construction techniques such as dovetail joinery, hand-cut screws, natural ageing of the timber, and fitted internal compartments lined with velvet, leather, or watered silk.

This piece can be displayed closed upon a console table, desk, or bookcase as a functional decorative object, or opened to exhibit vintage writing implements within a study or living room.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaning agents.
