Description

A superb pair of antique Regency period mahogany side chairs. They were made in England, they date from around the 1815-1830 period.

The quality is outstanding, they are beautifully made in the typical regency style. They have Trafalgar shaped backs, sit on sabre shaped legs and they have gorgeous brass details throughout. They are a great size to be used as occasional side chairs or as dining chairs.

We have had them re-polished, the mahogany has a gorgeous patina and colour tone. The drop in seats have been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric, the condition is excellent for their age.

Regency furniture, popular in Britain during the early 19th century, drew heavily from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian design motifs, featuring clean lines, dark woods like mahogany, and often incorporating brass or gilt bronze mounts.

Cabinet makers of the Regency period predominantly utilised imported dark hardwoods such as mahogany and rosewood, frequently incorporating brass inlay, gilt metal mounts, and traditional horsehair or webbed upholstery for the drop-in seats.

Authentication involves examining construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional joinery, timber shrinkage patterns, patination on the wood, and the presence of historical hand tools marks rather than modern machine production.

Pairing antique Regency chairs with a sleek, minimalist modern dining table creates a striking contrast that highlights the sculptural timber forms, while neutral upholstery ensures they integrate seamlessly with various colour palettes.

Maintain mahogany timber by keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoiding extreme fluctuations in humidity and temperature, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the polished surface.
