This “Chinese 19th C Cloisonné Enamel Box, Circa 1880 ” found a buyer.

It was listed by Robert Belcher Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This very pleasing small Chinese cloisonné enamel box is lovely quality.

It is very sturdy in its manufacture with a good strong hinge to the lid.

The box is raised up onto gilt brass ball feet with a matching gilt frame to the underside of the box and both rim edges to the open lid.

The bold colour scheme of the enamel is quite dramatic with black boarders and background highlighting the fine brightly colour decoration which is in the form of multiple stems of coloured flowers in yellow, pink, blue and white with green foliage.

This delightful box is in very good condition with no damage.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

Cloisonne enamel involves applying vitreous enamel to metal vessels or boxes using wire compartments, a technique that gained significant refinement and popularity in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

These pieces are typically constructed from a brass or copper base, with fine metal wires soldered to the surface to form cells, which are then filled with coloured glass paste and fired multiple times.

Authentic items from this period often display hand-ground finishes, slight irregularities in the enamel work, weightiness from the metal substrate, and natural ageing or oxidation on the exposed bronze or brass elements.

This type of decorative object adds rich colour and texture when placed on a coffee table, bookshelf, or mantelpiece, contrasting well with minimalist or transitional modern schemes.

Preserve these items by dusting gently with a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, and keeping them out of direct sunlight to protect the integrity of the enamel and metal.
