A cushion mirror features a convex or sloped outer frame moulding that angles inward towards the central glass plate, a style popularised during the 17th century and revived in various forms throughout the 19th century in France.

These frames were typically constructed from carved timber, coated with layers of gesso to create a smooth surface, and finished with fine metal leaf applied over a bole base, often burnished to achieve a metallic lustre.

Authentic period pieces often show characteristic signs of age such as minor losses to the gesso, oxidisation or foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass plates, hand-carved joinery, and natural shrinkage cracks in the timber backing.

Placing a reflective gilt piece opposite a window maximises natural light, while hanging it above a modern fireplace or contemporary sideboard creates an effective contrast between historical ornamentation and clean architectural lines.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or microfibre cloth, strictly avoiding liquid cleaners, chemical solvents, or abrasive materials that can strip the gold leaf.
