The Chippendale style, originating from the mid-18th century British designer Thomas Chippendale, combines rococo, gothic, and chinoiserie influences, characterised by intricate carving, cabriole legs, and high-quality mahogany construction.

Makers predominantly utilised dense tropical hardwoods like Cuban and Honduras mahogany, which allowed for precise, crisp hand-carving. Upholstery traditionally featured silk damask, needlepoint, or leather secured with brass tacking.

Authentication involves examining construction methods such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, signs of age-related timber oxidisation, tool marks from hand planes, and the weight and grain structure of old-growth mahogany.

Placing a historical armchair in a modern setting creates an effective focal point through contrast. Pairing the dark timber with minimalist decor or neutral textiles allows the historical craftsmanship to stand out.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels between 40-50 percent and avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and fabric fading. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of appropriate conservation wax protects the patina.
