We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Victorian mirrors are characterised by ornate craftsmanship, heavy use of gesso and gilt wood, and often incorporate classical motifs influenced by revivalist movements of the 19th century.

These mirrors typically feature a softwood or hardwood base, coated in layers of gesso, and finished with gold leaf or metallic paint.

Authentication involves examining the backing boards, hand-cut screws or nails, the presence of foxing or age spots on the mercury or silvered glass, and the depth and crackle of the gesso layer.

An antique gilt mirror can serve as a striking focal point when hung above a modern minimalist console table or fireplace, creating a deliberate contrast between historic ornamentation and contemporary clean lines.

Gilt wood surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush. Liquid cleaners and abrasive cloths must be avoided to prevent stripping the delicate metallic leaf and gesso.
