FAQs

The Louis XV style, often associated with the Rococo movement, is characterised by asymmetrical designs, natural motifs such as leaves and shells, and a sense of lightness and fluidity.

These mirrors are typically constructed from carved wood, such as pine or gesso-coated hardwoods, finished with gold leaf applied via water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-carved details, genuine age-related wear to the gilding revealing the bole beneath, and historic mirror plates featuring slight foxing or imperfections.

A giltwood mirror can serve as a striking focal point when hung above a minimalist mantelpiece or console table, creating a deliberate contrast between historic ornate craftsmanship and clean contemporary lines.

Gilded surfaces should be gently dusted with a soft, dry brush and kept away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to prevent the delicate gold leaf from flaking or tarnishing.
