This large Victorian overmantle mirror dates to 1860 in the Victorian style. The piece uses giltwood, gesso, and glass in a bright gold colour. The arch top frame holds a mercury mirror plate displaying fine surface wear and deterioration, backed by a wooden panel. An elaborate carved shell cresting sits at the top, accompanied by foliate scrolls, beaded moulding, and detailed corner spandrels along the sides and base. The heavy frame stands on squared feet, ready to mount above the mantel in a principal reception room or study. Measuring 170.5 cm high, 161 cm wide at the base, and 18 cm deep, the mirror commands significant presence against a chimney breast. The vertical proportions suit grand living spaces, bringing period character and warm metallic reflection to traditional interiors. Homeowners place this style above fireplaces to maximise light and create a sense of expanded depth in formal rooms.

FAQs

Victorian overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit above fireplace hearths, featuring flat bases, arched tops, and ornate decorative crestings influenced by Rococo Revival and Neoclassical design movements of the nineteenth century.

These mirrors were predominantly constructed with pine or lime wood frames covered in gesso, carved composite mouldings, and finished with gold leaf gilding over a coloured clay bole base.

Authentic pieces generally show natural age-related wear to the gilding, revealing the underlying red bole or white gesso, along with original mirror glass featuring light foxing and wooden backboards secured with square-headed iron tacks.

Positioning a large gilt overmantel mirror above a modern fireplace, console table, or architectural ledge introduces historical contrast, maximises natural light, and serves as a central focal point in contemporary living spaces.

Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft-bristle brush, avoiding any liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths which can easily dissolve water-gilded gesso surfaces or strip away fragile gold leaf coating.
