This 19th-century William IV teapoy is a converted rosewood piece in a rich brown colour with a faded tone. The structure comprises a hinged sarcophagus-form top with stepped mouldings and a central keyhole fitted with a small green tassel, mounted on a heavily turned pedestal column above a quadruped platform base supported by carved scroll feet. The solid timber displays varied grain patterns across the rectangular box and the plinth. Measuring 86.5 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 33 cm deep, this item functions practically today as an occasional table, suited for placement at the end of a sofa in a living room or study. The interior compartments have been removed during conversion, leaving a clean open cavity within the locking body for versatile storage.

A teapoy is a small piece of 19th-century furniture designed specifically to hold and secure valuable tea leaves, usually housing internal caddies and glass blending bowls on a central pedestal stand.

Teapoys from the William IV era were commonly constructed from rich hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany, featuring flame veneers, hand-carved pedestal columns, brass hardware, and dovetail joinery.

Authentic pieces display period-correct features including heavy architectural shaping, sarcophagus-shaped lids, turned and carved central columns resting on shaped platform bases, and natural wood grain variations.

A converted teapoy functions efficiently as a compact side table or accent piece placed beside an armchair or sofa, providing discrete storage for small items while serving as a focal point.

Rosewood requires protection from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, along with periodic applications of natural beeswax polish to maintain moisture and timber lustre.
