This large French Gothic Revival overmantel mirror dates from 1920. The piece is constructed from giltwood, glass, and brass, and the finish displays a gold colour with a good old gilt patina. The rectangular frame measures 15 cm wide and features pierced carving with acanthus leaves and scrolling foliage all the way around. Set into the glass are two twin brass sconces with ram's heads set in the brass, accompanied by visible candle holders and a bevelled mirror panel. The piece measures 107 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this mirror is intended for placement above the mantel in a living room, drawing room, or hallway to create a focal point inspired by a French chateau aesthetic. The substantial proportions and intricate carving suit placement against a prominent chimney breast, reflecting light and adding architectural interest to the interior space.

A French Gothic Revival overmantel mirror typically features elaborate hand-carved tracery, acanthus leaf motifs, and architectural proportions designed to anchor a fireplace chimney breast. Integrated sconces were incorporated to multiply ambient candle or electric light across the room.

These mirrors were constructed using carved solid timber or gesso moulded over wood, finished with genuine gold leaf application. The lighting sconces were typically cast in brass or bronze, fitted directly through or alongside the glass mirror panel.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-carving under the gesso, subtle wear or oxidisation to the gilding revealing red or grey bole underneath, and period-appropriate joinery on the wooden backing boards.

Positioning the mirror above a focal fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or dining room sideboard creates architectural scale. The warm gold leaf tones provide visual contrast against muted modern paint schemes or dark moody feature walls.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that degrade gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass using a lightly dampened cloth, ensuring moisture does not touch the gilded frame perimeter.
