Louis Philippe mirrors originated in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe in the mid-19th century, known for their understated elegance, rounded upper corners, and simple yet sophisticated frames.

These pieces typically feature a wooden construction, often gessoed and gilded, with mercury-silvered glass plates held securely within handcrafted frames.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy foxing or oxidisation on the glass plate, hand-planed backing boards, and traditional joinery methods rather than modern fixings.

Positioning the mirror above a fireplace mantel or leaning it against a wall adds depth, reflects natural light, and introduces a historical focal point to modern living spaces.

Maintain the piece by dusting the frame gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding chemical cleaners on both the gilded surface and the aged mirror plate to prevent damage.
