Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century Louis Philippe overmantel mirror is characterised by rounded upper corners, clean geometric lines, and a subtly curved top frame. Often executed with gold leaf, gesso, or ebonised wood finishes, these mirrors were constructed specifically to rest above fireplace mantels in formal living areas.

These mirrors were constructed using solid timber frames covered with gesso moulding, finished with ebonised black stain or dark lacquer, and fitted with mercury-amalgam glass plates that develop characteristic foxing over time.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved backboards held in by wrought nails, natural craquelure on the gesso finish, subtle oxidation marks or foxing on the glass silvering, and a flat base designed to sit flush on a mantelpiece.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace or atop a modern console table to serve as a dramatic focal point. The contrast between dark ebonised wood and light plaster walls provides depth and structure within contemporary or classic design schemes.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, keeping moisture away from gesso and ebonised detailing. Clean the glass plate using glass cleaner applied sparingly to a soft cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the glass to prevent moisture reaching the frame backing.
