Description

An absolutely magnificent antique Irish Georgian period walnut and leather armchair. This was made in Ireland, we would date it to around the 1750-1780 period.

This is the finest example you could hope to see, widely copied and rarely seen in its original form.

The solid walnut frame is exquisitely carved with eagle head motifs on the arm rests and also on the knees. The knees also have acanthus leaf carving, the cabriole shaped legs terminate in claw and ball feet.

This has a gorgeous, sweeping shape to the frame and it is very comfortable.

We have had the frame re-polished to a very high standard, and we have had it re-upholstered in hand coloured leather. The original horse hair stuffing remains inside the upholstery.

The condition is excellent, this is a museum quality piece.

The Georgian style spans the reigns of the four King Georges from 1714 to 1830, characterised by architectural proportions, classical motifs, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary cabinet timber.

Authentic period armchairs typically utilise solid hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved ornamentation, and upholstered leather secured with individual brass tacks.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the hand-cut joinery, the type and oxidation of the secondary timbers, tool marks consistent with period hand-tools, and the natural patination on both the wood and leather surfaces.

An antique leather armchair works effectively as a statement piece in contemporary rooms by pairing its rich textural patina with minimalist surroundings, modern textiles, or architectural lighting to create visual contrast.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, periodically treating the leather with conservation-grade microcrystalline wax or saddle soap, and dusting the wood with a dry, soft cloth.
