Meiji period lacquerware spans from 1868 to 1912, a time when Japanese craftsmanship gained international acclaim through world expositions, combining traditional techniques with innovative artistic designs.

These pieces are crafted from wood coated with successive layers of sap from the lacquer tree, often decorated using the maki-e technique where gold and silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit fine hand-painted details, natural wear consistent with age, traditional wooden core construction, and meticulous finishing on the interior surfaces.

Positioning the object as a focal point on a plain surface such as a coffee table or a console allows the intricate metallic detailing to stand out against modern minimal backdrops.

Lacquer items should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, cleaning them only with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without using chemical polishes.
