Description

A quality satinwood box with three compartments and attractive turned handles to each side.

The David Joel label to the underside.

David Joel was the joint founder of the distinguished Betty Joel firm. When his wife retired, he purchased the factory in 1937 to manufacture as David Joel Limited.

Like Betty he designed many beautiful pieces of furniture, often using the best materials available. He used many woods from the British Empire, including Canada, Australia, British Honduras, West Africa and in this case India. Indian Laurel is a close grained heavy wood, dark walnut in colour, and in the solid the waste factor makes it expensive.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Art Deco design typically features clean geometric lines, symmetrical forms, and an emphasis on the natural grain of exotic and luxury timbers such as satinwood, walnut, and mahogany.

Craftsmen of the era utilised solid timber frames lined with contrasting veneers, often employing traditional dovetail joints and hand-polished French polish finishes to highlight the wood figure.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction methods, tool marks, maker signatures or stamps, timber ageing, and the specific type of interior lining and hardware typical of the period.

Place the piece on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or coffee table as a focal point, allowing its natural wood grain to introduce warmth and texture to minimalist or modern spaces.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, cleaning only with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding silicone-based polishes or harsh chemical cleaners.
