Champleve enamel is a technique where troughs or cells are carved into a metal surface and filled with vitreous enamel paste before firing. This method saw a major revival in 19th-century France during the Napoleon III period, when craftsmen produced ornate decorative objects emulating medieval designs.

These caskets typically use a base metal such as brass or bronze, which is cast, chased, and fire-gilded with a mercury amalgam (known as ormolu) to achieve a rich golden finish. Inset panels of champleve enamel feature coloured glass pastes fired at high temperatures within recessed metal channels.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy, genuine cast bronze or brass bases rather than lightweight modern alloys, combined with hand-chased surface details that show subtle tool marks and natural age-related patination. The enamel work should display micro-imperfections, soft lustre, and flush integration with the metal partitions.

An antique ormolu casket serves as a striking focal point when placed on a mantelpiece, coffee table, or bookshelf, providing a rich metallic contrast against contemporary clean lines. It can be paired with neutral textures and minimalist surroundings to highlight its intricate craftsmanship.

Preserve the fire-gilt surface by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding all commercial metal polishes, abrasive cleaners, or chemical solvents that can strip the delicate gilding. Enamel insets should be kept away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to prevent degradation.
