Description

A beautiful and quite charming antique Victorian shaving mirror. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

This is of superb quality, it is beautifully carved from solid mahogany. The oval mirror sits on a tripod base, the mirror can be angled and adjusted with an original metal sharks tooth mechanism on the back.

This mirror sits quite low, because the man shaving would be sitting on a chair in front of it.

We have had the mahogany frame re-polished, it is in excellent condition for its age. The bevelled glass looks to be original, there is some minor distressing to the silvered backing on the edges.

Victorian shaving and dressing mirrors became popular during the 19th century as personal grooming habits evolved, often featuring adjustable swivel frames to catch the best light.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-carved details, turned pedestals, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authenticity is identified by examining the timber grain, hand-cut screws, foxing or oxidisation on the original glass plate, and traditional patina consistent with age.

Such pieces can be placed on a chest of drawers, sideboard, or dressing table to add warmth, historical texture, and functional reflection to contemporary bedroom schemes.

Maintain the timber using natural beeswax to nourish the wood, and clean the glass gently with a soft cloth while avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
