Chinoiserie is a European artistic style that reflects Chinese artistic influences, popularised in Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries and revived during the Edwardian era.

Japanning involves coating wooden substrates with layers of resin varnish, traditionally cured and polished, then decorated with gilt or painted motifs in imitation of East Asian lacquerware.

Authentication involves examining the timber substrate, the type of gesso and lacquer used, hand-painted or gilt details, and the ageing characteristics of the glass and backing materials.

Position the piece as a focal point against a neutral or contrasting wall colour to highlight the intricate gold and black lacquerwork, pairing it with minimalist furniture to balance the ornate detailing.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical solvents, abrasive cleaners, or excess moisture that could damage the fragile lacquer and gilt finish.
