A vinaigrette is a small, portable container dating from the Georgian and Victorian eras, specifically featuring an internal grille, designed to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar to mask unpleasant odours.

These items were typically fabricated from sterling silver using techniques such as engine-turning, die-stamping, hand-engraving, and interior gilding, paired with a pierced or engraved internal grille.

Authenticity is verified by checking for clear British hallmarksincluding the assay office mark, date letter, and makers markas well as assessing the quality of the hand-engraving, hinge construction, and the secure fit of the internal grille.

These small objects can be displayed as part of a curated tablescape on a desk, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or styled on a decorative tray alongside other small curiosities to add historical texture to a room.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a soft microfiber cloth and a mild, non-abrasive silver polish only when necessary, avoiding harsh dips that can strip the natural patina and damage delicate engravings or gilding.
