Tea caddies originated in the 18th century when tea was an expensive and heavily taxed commodity. They were designed as secure, lockable containers to store precious loose-leaf tea, often featuring compartmentalised interiors to keep different varieties fresh.

Traditional caddies were crafted from fine cabinet timbers such as mahogany, satinwood, rosewood, and tortoiseshell. Master cabinetmakers employed complex veneering, stringing, and marquetry techniques, often incorporating brass locks and escutcheons.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber grain, hand-cut dovetail joints, old secondary woods like pine or cedar inside, and the patina of the hardware. Original steel locks, hand-carved feet, and interior foil linings also indicate period manufacture.

An antique tea caddy serves as a sophisticated accent piece on a sideboard, coffee table, or open bookshelf. Its warm wood tones and geometric inlay provide a textural contrast against contemporary minimalist surfaces.

Preservation requires keeping wooden caddies away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer cracking. Regular dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and occasional application of microcrystalline wax maintains the historic finish without causing damage.
