Description

Here is a fantastic octagonal brass bevelled mirror, dating around 1900, and belonging to the Arts ad Crafts movement.

The mirror plate is bright and clear, and is framed within a brass frame with a hammered design of scallop shells and foliage.

As a note of interest, this particular mirror belonged to a gentleman called Cedric Robinson MBE, who held the intriguing title of 'The Queens Guide to The Sands' which meant he was the noted and official escort across the tidal estuary of Morcambe Bay in the North West of England.

The mirror measures 76cm by 45cm, and its in good condition with just the expected surface wear of an item of its age. It can be hung either landscape or portrait and is suspended by a chain from the back.

I offer free delivery to the UK, and am very happy to arrange quotes for shipping abroad.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can provide any further information or photographs.

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass-produced industrial goods, championing traditional handcraftsmanship, natural motifs, and honest materials such as hammered brass.

These pieces are typically constructed using a thin sheet of brass hand-hammered and pushed out from the reverse side to create raised relief designs, mounted over a wooden or structural backing board.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of age such as natural oxidation, hand-tooled hammer marks on the metal surface, period-appropriate fixings, and historical mirror glass showing subtle foxing.

An antique metal mirror acts as a striking focal point when hung above a minimalist mantelpiece or console table, contrasting warm metallic tones against contemporary neutral walls.

Dust the frame gently with a soft dry cloth without using harsh chemical polishes that can strip the aged patina, and clean the glass surface with a mild glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror.
