Overmantle mirrors gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, designed specifically to hang above fireplace mantelpieces to reflect candlelight and natural daylight into formal rooms.

These pieces typically feature a carved wooden or composition frame coated in gesso, a plaster-like mixture, which was then meticulously water-gilded or oil-gilded with thin sheets of gold leaf.

Authentic period mirrors often exhibit hand-applied gesso, slight imperfections or foxing in the original mercury or silvered glass, and hand-cut joinery or securing fixings on the reverse of the frame.

Placing an overmantle mirror above a fireplace creates a dramatic focal point, whilst resting it unsecured against a living room wall introduces an effortless, layered aesthetic that balances modern and traditional elements.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should only be dusted gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid using any liquid cleaners, solvents, or abrasive materials which can strip the thin layer of gold leaf.
