This child's rocking chair dates from 1800 in a rustic country style. It is made from dark brown oak and rush, showing a natural wood finish. The piece has a ladderback backrest with five horizontal slats, a hand-woven rush seat, turned arm supports ending in knob finials, and curved wooden rockers. Further details include turned front legs and a central stretcher with circular bead turning. It measures 85 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. Suitable for use in a nursery, a living room corner, or a child's bedroom, this rocking chair works well as a decorative seating option or a functional piece for children. The sturdy construction and classic country aesthetic fit comfortably into traditional farmhouse interiors. The compact proportions allow it to sit easily beside larger seating or within a bedroom setting.

FAQs

A ladderback rocking chair is a traditional style of seating characterised by horizontal wooden slats across the backrest, resembling the rungs of a ladder, mounted upon curved wooden rockers.

These chairs were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as oak, ash, or elm, paired with hand-woven rush, seagrass, or timber seats.

Authentic examples feature hand-turned posts, peg joint construction, natural wear along the underside of the rockers, and aged patina across the wooden surface.

A rustic rocking chair can be positioned in a bedroom, nursery, or fireplace alcove as an accent piece, or styled with a folded textiles.

Keep the timber clean using a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically, while ensuring the natural rush seat remains free from excess moisture.
