FAQs

An overmantel mirror is a large rectangular or arched mirror specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace, often featuring decorative gilt moulding reflecting the architectural style of its period.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed using a timber base such as pine or gesso-coated wood, embellished with applied composition ornaments and finished with gold leaf or gilt paint.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of age such as foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, hand-carved or composition relief moulding showing minor losses, and old pine backing boards secured with handmade or early slotted screws.

Positioning a gilt overmantel mirror above a fireplace creates a dramatic focal point, where its warm metallic finish contrasts effectively with contemporary neutral walls or minimalist architectural details.

Gilded surfaces are exceptionally delicate and should only be dusted gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding any moisture, chemical cleaners, or abrasive materials that can strip the gold leaf.
