19th Century Italian Baroque Style Putti Statue

19th century
Description

A 19th century impressive large scale Italian Baroque style putti statue, depicts a winged cherub, with branch, different smaller scallop shells and holding one large carved scallop shell in exceptional detail, lovely patina and hand carved into solid pine wood. The putti statue dates from the 1860s and is of Baroque style, showcasing the drama, movement and animation of sculptures and architecture during that time. The nude winged infant, known as putti or cherub, supports a large carved pine scallop shell (with hinged top revealing small storage) as if making an offering, standing on a shaped base, decorated with more shells. Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baroque revival style in 19th-century Italian carving is characterised by dynamic movement, theatrical poses, and detailed anatomical rendering. Sculptors frequently incorporated classical motifs such as putti, scallop shells, and naturalistic foliage to create visual drama.

These sculptures were typically hand-carved from hardwoods such as walnut, fruitwood, or lime. Artisans utilised chisels and gouges to carve from solid timber blocks, often finishing the surface with wax, varnish, or stain to highlight the grain.

Authentic pieces display hand-tool marks, natural wood shrinkage cracks consistent with age, and a rich patina in recessed areas. The carving depth in hair, wings, and drapery demonstrates skilled craftsmanship rather than modern machine replication.

A carved wooden sculpture functions as a tactile focal point when placed on a minimalist sideboard, console table, or deep window sill. Pairing dramatic sculptural forms with clean-lined modern furniture creates an engaging visual contrast.

Dust the sculpture regularly with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to reach deep carvings. Avoid positioning timber items near heat sources or in direct sunlight, and apply a high-quality beeswax paste periodically to protect the finish.
