This large Italian Renaissance style wall mirror takes the architectural form of a tabernacle, dating to 1880. Constructed from giltwood, glass, and paint, the piece presents a striking combination of gleaming gold and dark green surfaces. The broken pediment features an ornate central shell crest flanked by volutes, resting above a rectangular frame enclosing an old mirror plate with minor losses. Flanking the central glass are carved side pilasters with classical column capitals, set against dark painted panels, while the heavy framework is anchored by a deep stepped base at the bottom. Measuring 152 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, this very heavy mirror is designed to sit securely upon a mantle, chest, or console table in a grand hallway, drawing room, or dining space. Its architectural silhouette and rich antique character make it an impressive focal point when placed above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or heavy wooden chest.

FAQs

A tabernacle mirror features an architectural frame inspired by classical Renaissance building facades and altarpieces, typically incorporating side pilasters, a pediment cresting, and a heavy base structure.

These frames were predominantly hand-carved from wood, finished with water gilding using gold leaf over a red bole preparation, and occasionally detailed with painted panels or parcel-gilt accents.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible signs of age, such as natural craquelure in the gesso layer, oxidisation of the gilding, hand-carved joint construction, and dark red bole showing through high-wear areas.

Architectural mirrors serve as structured focal points when hung above sideboards, mantelpieces, or consoles, anchoring contemporary rooms with classical geometric symmetry.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted gently using a soft, dry squirrel-hair brush, avoiding moisture, liquid cleaners, or chemical solvents that strip delicate gold leaf layers.
