Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Japanning is a European imitation of East Asian lacquerwork that became highly popular in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Applied to timber items such as workboxes, this technique involved layers of resin-based varnish finished with gilded hand-painted motifs, often depicting chinoiserie landscapes.

These pieces were typically constructed from softwoods or fruitwoods covered in japanned lacquer, spirit varnish, and gold leaf detailing. Interiors were lined with silk, velvet, or marbled paper, while handles and fittings featured turned bone, ivory, wood, or cast brass.

Authentic period examples display natural craquelure and surface wear consistent with age, alongside hand-drawn gilt work rather than printed transfers. Drawer linings and interior dividers will show hand-cut joinery, period brass hinges, and age-related patination on untarnished areas.

A japanned workbox functions as an accent piece on a hallway console table, dressing table, or sideboard. Displaying the box partially open highlights the contrast between the lacquered exterior and the vibrant textile lining.

Keep the surface clean using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or commercial solvents that degrade historic varnish. Place the object away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage and lacquer lifting.
