This Victorian spoonback armchair dates from around 1870 and follows the Victorian style in mahogany and velvet. The warm brown wooden frame supports beige deep-buttoned upholstery with scrolled arms and cabriole front legs fitted with period ceramic castors. Historic knocks, marks, cracks, scratches, wear, imperfections, repairs and alterations appear across the surfaces, alongside solid joints free of woodworm. The dimensions measure 70 cm wide, 85 cm deep and 96 cm high, with a seat height of 40 cm and arm height of 55 cm. Placing this seating option in a traditional sitting room, study or bedroom provides a practical and characterful spot for daily reading or relaxation.

Originating during the mid-19th century, spoon-back armchairs feature a contoured timber frame that curves inward to resemble the bowl of a spoon, providing ergonomic support and a distinctive silhouette.

Victorian armchairs were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, upholstered using natural horsehair stuffing, steel coil springs, and fabrics such as velvet, damask, or leather.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery, hand-tied internal springs, original brass or ceramic castors, and natural age-related patination on the mahogany frame.

A Victorian armchair can serve as an accent piece in a modern living space, pairing structured period woodwork with minimalist contemporary sofas or neutral neutral tone decor.

Keep the timber frame away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, clean wood surfaces with natural beeswax polish, and vacuum velvet upholstery gently with a soft brush attachment.
