FAQs

Nineteenth-century carved mirrors often drew inspiration from earlier Baroque and Rococo revivals, featuring elaborate scrollwork, asymmetrical lines, and hand-carved floral or figural motifs crafted by skilled artisans.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as pine, lime, or fruitwood, which were intricately hand-carved, gessoed, and finished with paint, gilding, or whitewash.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved tool marks, aged wood substrates, traditional joinery, and often display genuine oxidisation, foxing, or silver loss on the original mercury or silver-nitrate glass plates.

Placing a large antique mirror above a modern minimalist sideboard or leaning it unhung against a plain wall creates a striking focal point that balances historical texture with contemporary clean lines.

Clean the glass sparingly with a soft, lint-free cloth and mild, non-ammonia cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly to the glass, avoiding harsh chemicals on the aged painted or gilded wooden frame.
