Lancashire spindleback chairs originated in the North West of England during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving from regional vernacular seating traditions to provide sturdy, lightweight seating for rural homes.

These chairs are traditionally constructed from native hardwoods such as ash, oak, or elm, featuring hand-turned spindles and seats woven from natural marsh rush.

Authenticity is identified by hand-turned components with minor irregularities, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, historical wear patterns on the wooden feet, and tightly hand-woven rush seats.

They provide tactile warmth and historical contrast when paired with contemporary dining tables or used as occasional seating in a hallway or bedroom.

Maintain the wood with microcrystalline wax and preserve the rush seating by avoiding excessive moisture, direct sunlight, and low-humidity environments that can cause the natural fibres to become brittle.
