Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the mid-to-late 18th century under the influence of Thomas Chippendale, this style is defined by a series of horizontal pierced slats across the backrest, often topped by a subtle serpentine cresting rail. The design combines architectural structure with pierced scrollwork for visual lightness.

Authentic period examples are primarily constructed from dense timber, most notably Cuban or Honduran mahogany, with mortise and tenon joinery. Drop-in seat frames were typically covered in silk damask, brocade, or fine wool upholstery.

Look for crisp hand-carved details along the pierced slats, natural timber oxidisation, subtle moulding along the front legs, and corner spandrels or fretwork brackets at the leg junctions. Genuine period pieces will also exhibit hand-planed underside surfaces and authentic patination.

A single Chippendale carver works exceptionally well as an accent chair at a dark wood writing desk, alongside a contemporary console table, or placed in a hallway to create historic grounding within a modern space.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage and fading. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and an occasional application of high-quality beeswax will protect the patination and lustre of the wood.
