Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian Neoclassical mirrors from the late 18th century typically feature architectural symmetry, controlled proportions, and classical motifs derived from Greco-Roman antiquity. Common decorative elements include laurel festoons, carved rosettes, urn finials, and pierced lattice friezes, often executed with gilding contrasting against dark ebonised wood.

Frames were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with multiple layers of gesso ground, and smoothed before the application of water gilding using gold leaf over red or yellow clay bole. Contrasting dark sections were finished using dark distemper paint or ebonised wood stains.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-carved wood joinery on the reverse, mercury-amalgam glass silvering with greyish oxidation specks, and natural wear to the gold leaf revealing underlying clay bole. Machine precision, modern screws, and uniform backboards indicate later reproductions.

Positioning an ebonised and giltwood mirror above a modern console table or fireplace mantel creates a balanced focal point. The contrast between dark paint, gold gilding, and contemporary architectural lines bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalist spaces.

Giltwood frames must be kept in stable humidity environments away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking of the gesso ground. Cleaning should be limited to gentle dusting with a soft dry brush, while water and liquid solvents must be avoided as they dissolve traditional water gilding.
