Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This complete set of twelve 19th Century Chippendale style dining chairs comprises ten side chairs and two carvers, constructed from dark mahogany brown timber with a polished finish. Each chair stands upon square legs joined by H-stretchers, supporting a drop-in seat upholstered in red damask fabric featuring a floral pattern. The open backs incorporate serpentine reeded crest rails above intricately pierced vertical splats, while the two carver chairs are fitted with out-curved arms. The chairs measure 104 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. Traditional in design and generous in scale, this large matching set suits a formal dining room or a spacious country house setting to seat guests in comfort around a large dining table. The traditional construction and fresh red upholstery suit both period properties and contemporary interiors seeking a classic British aesthetic.

FAQs

Chippendale dining chairs, named after cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, typically feature pierced splats, serpentine crest rails, and solid hardwood construction such as mahogany. The design often incorporates decorative carved elements ranging from Gothic arches to rococo scrolls and ribbon motifs.

Primary timber was typically dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its fine grain and strength. Upholstery traditionally favoured woven silks, brocades, damasks, or horsehair fabric stretched over drop-in or fixed seat frames.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-sawn wood marks, natural timber shrinkage over time, mortise-and-tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, and uneven hand-carved details. Period seats often feature drop-in frames with corner blocks screwed or glued into place.

A large set of mahogany chairs creates contrast when set against modern minimalist dining tables or neutral wall tones. Reupholstering seats in modern linen or boucle fabrics can bridge classic cabinetmaking with contemporary aesthetic palettes.

Maintain mahogany timber by applying beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the patination. Keep seating away from direct sunlight and heat radiators to prevent wood shrinkage, cracking, or fabric fading.
