This RARE PAIR OF WILLIAM IV ROSEWOOD PRIE DIEU CHAIRS date from circa 1840. They are both stamped on the side rail ''W. ANGERSTEIN''.
I believe this could be an Inventory Stamp for William Angerstein (1811-1897), Liberal MP for Greenwich 1865, High Sheriff of Norfolk 1872 and resident of Weeting Hall in Norfolk (demolished in 1954).
He was the Grandson of John Julius Angerstein, a ''prime mover'' in Lloyd''s Insurance, whose famous and extensive Art Collection formed the basis of The National Gallery in London.
The CHAIRS, which retain some of their original patterned ticking and all of their horsehair stuffing, vary slightly in dimensions - made, perhaps, as His and Hers, one being slightly taller and slimmer. As can be seen in the photographs, they have matching brass castors to front and back.
The CHAIRS are in good, original condition. The upholstery needs a little attention on the backs and a new top cover.
