Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced to Western Europe from the Ottoman Empire in the late eighteenth century, ottomans were originally low, cushion-covered seating units. During the Victorian era, British cabinetmakers adapted the design by adding hinged lids, deep padding, and internal storage compartments, creating multifunctional furniture for dressing rooms and drawing rooms.

Authentic period ottomans were typically built around sturdy solid hardwood frames such as pine, oak, or mahogany. Internal upholstery traditionally incorporated coil springs, natural horsehair padding, webbing, and heavy canvas or linen coverings, often trimmed with brass studding and mounted on ceramic or metal castors.

Look for construction signs such as hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery within the wooden base frame, authentic iron or brass hinges, and an original metal escutcheon keyhole. Hand-driven brass studding and original brass or ceramic castors on a dark wood plinth further indicate period origin.

A box ottoman functions effectively placed at the foot of a bed or utilised as a central coffee table footstool in a living space. Neutral-upholstered examples integrate easily alongside modern seating while offering practical storage for textiles and accessories.

Regularly vacuum fabric upholstery using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust build-up, and clean timber bases with a gentle beeswax polish. Protect the piece from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, and inspect castors periodically to ensure smooth movement without scratching floor surfaces.
